Two Tickets

Same bus every month.
Same road out of town.
I buy two tickets.
Nobody asks me now.

One by the window.
One beside me.

Two tickets.
Every road we planned.
One for me.
One still in my hand.
City by city,
mile after mile,
I’m seeing the country
for both of us now.

A new driver looked at me.
“You only need one.”

I said,
“I know.”

And took my usual seat.

Two tickets.
Every road we planned.
One for me.
One still in my hand.
City by city,
mile after mile,
I’m seeing the country
for both of us now.

You said,
“When I get better,
we’ll see it all.”

So I kept going.

Two tickets.
One empty seat.
One more town
you never got to see.

City by city,
mile after mile,
I’m finishing the journey
for both of us now.
