The Last Lighthouse

Every night
I climb these stairs
Salt on the glass
Cold in the air

The harbor sleeps
The houses fade
Still I turn
The light again

I keep the light on
For nobody at all
Across the black water
Beyond the harbor wall

Night after night
Nothing comes through
Then one light answers
Out of the blue

No ships remain
No voices call
Only the wind
Against the wall

I raise my eyes
Across the foam
One distant light
Is moving home

I keep the light on
For nobody at all
Across the black water
Beyond the harbor wall

Night after night
Nothing comes through
Then one light answers
Out of the blue

One flash
Then two

I send one back

And wait
For you
