THE DEVIL TRIED

He whispered pretty lies into my ear,
promised me the world was mine to take.
Built me golden kingdoms out of nothing,
while beneath my feet he dug my grave.

The devil tried, but I didn't fall.
I had a fire stronger than it all.
At the crossroads I stood alone,
but found the strength to choose my own.

My heart became my shield that night.
The devil tried.
I chose the light.

He showed me every weakness I had hidden,
every tear and every scar I knew.
Tried to pull me underneath the darkness,
make me something he could own and use.

I walked away with nothing left to fear.
He became a shadow disappearing.
Now I know what he could never see 
the strongest thing I had was always me.
