Borrowed Name

You gave me your name
on a hospital night.
“Take it out west.
Take it into the light.”

One week on the road.
That was the plan.

I’ve been living on a borrowed name,
driving roads you never came.
One week turned to fifteen years.
Your name stayed with me through the years.

I reached that coast.
I should have gone home.
One mile for you,
then a thousand on my own.

I’ve been living on a borrowed name,
driving roads you never came.
One week turned to fifteen years.
Your name stayed with me through the years.

Maybe I kept my word too long.
Tomorrow I’ll give them my own.

I’ve been living on a borrowed name.
Tonight I leave it with the road.
I carried you as far as I could.
Now I’m taking my name home.
